The Issues Committee
The purpose of the Issues Committee is to bring interesting and informative issues to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. The Issues Committee shall guide its programming toward ideas and issues that can stimulate and enrich the university community. These programs will be flexible in their forms and will reflect the diversity of values in the university community. The Issues Committee is one of the programmatic committees that comprise the Central Program Council under the auspices of the Office of Student Activities. Recent speakers have included Bill Nye the Science Guy, Reverend Al Sharpton, Alan Keyes, sports journalist Frank Deford, photographer James Nachtwey, and activist Angela Davis.
Issues Committee Membership Drive
The Issues Committee is now launching our membership drive for the Spring Semester 2009. Applications are available here, at the Issues website. They will be due on March 12th by 5pm. Please return completed applications to the Student Activities Office (US 305), or you may email your application to issues@utk.edu. We will contact you about setting-up an interview time after spring break.

Issues Committee presents Anya Kamenetz
She is a young personal finance expert who has reached millions with both her book "Generation Debt: The New Economics of Being Young" and through her column for Yahoo Finance. Kamenetz writes about the startling range of economic upheavals facing young people in their 20s and 30s: the rising cost of higher education, soaring student loan and credit card debt, an increasingly uncertain job market, health care and retirement worries and international competition. A book signing will follow the event. This event is free and open to the public.
This event will take place March 3rd at 7:30 pm in the UC Auditorium.

Issues Committee Presents Brian Fagan
Fagan is emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara and is widely regarded as the world's leading archaeological writer. His more than 40 books about archaeology and history include "The Rape of the Nile" and "The Adventure of Archaeology." In his most recent book, "The Great Warming," Fagan uses cutting edge techniques to assess historic and current occurrences of global climate change and drought. A book signing will follow the event.
This event will be held February 26th, at 7:30 PM in the UC Ballroom. It is free and open to the public.

Issues Committee Presents Bernard Von Nothaus
The Issues Committee will be hosting Bernard von NotHaus Thursday January 15th at 7:30 in the UC Auditorium. In 1998, with the support of other concerned Americans, von NotHaus introduced the Liberty Dollar to exemplify the principles of a free market, value-backed, private currency that is free from government control. He is the "monetary architect" at NORFED, a non-profit, free-enterprise corporation that has distributed $20 million Liberty Dollars to over 100,000 people. Bernard's Law: "When the people own the money they control the government. When the government owns the money, it controls the people."

Issues Committee Launches Membership Drive
The Issues Committee is now accepting new members for the 2008-2009 school year. All interested students should complete the membership application and return it to the Office of Student Activities on the third floor of the University Center by 5 p.m. by Wednesday, October 8, 2008.
