Visual Arts Committee
The Visual Arts Committee (VAC) is comprised of 19 members who actively work to bring the arts to UT’s campus through exhibitions, lectures, and events. The Visual Arts Committee is one of seven committees that comprise the Central Program Council under the auspices of the Office of Student Activities.
The purpose of the Visual Arts Committee is to promote appreciation of the visual arts by exposing the University community to a variety of artistic ventures and educational displays. This is to be done through various form of programming including exhibits, live demonstrations, and lectures intended to illuminate new perspectives and address pertinent questions of the campus-wide audience.
The Visual Arts Committee manages the exhibitions in the University Center Concourse Gallery, changing shows every four to six weeks. Some of our past exhibitions include a display of TVA Dam Photographs, Charlie Daniel’s cartoons, the artwork of Diana Jacobs, display of works by the Guerrilla Girls, and an Afro-Equadorian Photographic study of the African Diaspora. We also work with other organizations, groups, and councils on campus to display work and co-sponsor events, like the Black Cultural Center and the Ewing Gallery. In Spring 2006, the Visual Arts Committee worked with the Issues Committee and the Office of the Chancellor to display a famous controversial mural currently re-covered in the University Center Ballroom. We also have brought artists of all media to lecture including Saya Woofalk, Jon Pylypchuk, Diana al-Hadid, and Steven Hull, working together with other campus organizations like the Sculpture Club, the Print Club, the Ewing Gallery, and the Black Cultural Center.
